Festivals
There is a long tradition of song and lyrical poetry in the Black Périgord. In the 17 Century, Perigordian troubadours such as the celebrated Bertand de Born, were coming to the attention of the royal court as a result of their talent as poets, musicians and composers. Classical and Baroque music, dances from all over the world, street theatre and classical or contemporary theatre, whatever your tastes, it can all be found here.
The Sarlat Theatre Festival
This festival was created in 1952 and is an important event in the cultural life of the Périgord. Classical plays are performed in the heart of the medieval centre of Sarlat. The festival takes place every year at the end of July to the beginning of August. Over the three weeks of the festival, over 20 plays are performed.
Sarlat Film Festival
Sarlat has so often been used as the setting for well known films, that it would be unthinkable that it did not have its own film festival. The festival has been in existence since 1981 and its annual competition takes place in November with up to 80 long and short films being presented.
The Imaginary Paths
In the first two weeks of July, the streets of Terrasson, home of The Imagnary Gardens are enlivened by shows and demonstrations. These are all free of charge.
The Montignac International Festival of world Dance and Music
At the end of July between 8 and 15 groups of musicians and dancers from all over the world arrive in Montignac to put on their original and flamboyant shows. The Festival of the Black Périgord A festival of classical music concerts taking place in stunning surroundings such as cathedrals, churches and ancient villages.
The Pays d’Ans of the parish of Hautefort festival
A festival of classical music concerts taking place in stunning surroundings such as Hautefort castle, Les Charreaux castle, the gardens of Tourniac, the the churches of Badefols d’Ans and Saint Agan.
The Belvès Bach Festival
Following the restoration of the Belvès church organ, this village, voted one of the « Most Beautiful Villages in France », echoes with the melodies of Jean-Sebastien Bach. Moments not to be missed!
