Traditional festivals

The Félibrée was created in 1903 and is THE traditional Occitan festival.  It takes place every year on the first Sunday of July in one of the towns of the department.  The immutable rituals are faithfully adhered to: the town doors are opened, a mass in the Occitan language is celebrated, a large Perigordian banquet is enjoyed, followed by a courtship ritual.  Finally, the streets are filled with the lively sounds of ancient skills and crafts being carried out.  For this festival, the town is swathed in beautiful decorations, such as paper flowers and old object and the official language is Occitan.  The festival gives the local people the chance to step back in time and tourists and new residents get to find out about local traditions in a convivial ambiance.

In Sarlat, the Ringuette celebrates authentic popular games such as primitive bowls, tug-of-war and greasy pole climbing.  Local produce is also promoted in May during Rural Life Day where locally produced goods are sold.

In Nabirat there is the Strawberry Festival at the end of April, the highlight of which is the giant strawberry tart measuring 20m2 under the covered market place so that even the greediest person will be sated.

In October in  Villefranche-du-Périgord there is The Mushroom and Chestnut Festival lasting 3 days in which to discover these two key Perigordian products.  There are some fun activities where you can learn whilst having fun, filling in a questionnaire of the local area.  Some visitors turn into real detectives trying to get the necessary information!  Food lovers are not left behind as there are numerous tasting sessions such as the giant cépe omelette.  Lots of nature activities are also organised around the chestnut wood.
